Migrant Experience

The Migrant Experience context illustrates how collaborative translation can support language learning and help bridge migrant and local host communities. We consult with ESL language centres in Melbourne to facilitate collaborations between migrants with conversational fluency and local members of the community.

Migrant participants write short accounts of personal experience in their native languages; they are then matched with a native speaker with little or no previous experience in that language or culture. Through the process of translating the writing into English, the collaborators initiate a process whereby the migrant’s inclusion in the host community is supported. Our collaborations have produced two publications.
